Solar Water Heater DIY
Kits
Using a solar water heater diy
kit is
one of the best and
easiest ways to get started with solar energy. This is a
great way to cut your hot water bill by at least
one-third, help reduce your carbon footprint,
and become more energy
independent.
I had to
laugh when my 21 year old son was surprised to find out that
there was such a thing as a solar water heater diy, all the way
back in 1980!
Not to
mention the fact that the first patent for a commercial solar
water heater was in 1891! That was even before I was born!
In reality, heating domestic hot water with the sun's energy is
as old as a bucket of water sitting in the
sun.
How to use a solar water heater diy
kit
There
are essentially two ways to
make your own solar water heater. One way is to get a
complete kit that includes everything. The other way is
to get a kit that contains all the knowledge required,
but you supply the
components.
When you buy a kit
that includes everything, you get the solar panels, the
plumbing, a pump and anything else you might need. It is a
solar water heater in a box, more or
less.
The solar hot water diy kit that provides
instructions and directions, does just that! You get the
know-how, and you supply the materials. Fortunately, all of the
materials can be obtained locally, at a good hardware
store.
Are solar water
heater diy kits safe?
Absolutely, they are
totally safe. In fact, by using a solar hot water heater, you
will prolong the life of your gas or electric hot wate heater.
This is for the obvious reason that it will not be used as
much!
The domestic hot water
produced from a solar hot water diy kit is no different that
your "usual" hot water, it is just heated by the sun. Instead
of using fossil fuels to heat the water, you simply use the
energy from the sun.
The plumbing is so simple
and straight-forward, that there is no danger at all. It is
just a matter of pre-heating the water and running it into your
existing hot water heater.
Do solar hot water diy
projects work in cold climates?
Yes, all you need is a
good southern exposure to use this system. There are thousands
of domestic solar hot water heaters in use all over the world,
in cold climates. I know this because I have lived in Norway,
Alaska, Wisconsin and Colorado!
How expensive are the
kits?
A complete kit that
supplies everything you need costs anywhere from $600 to
$18,000. That is quite a range, but so are people's hot water
needs. If you are replacing a hot water heater, or building a
new home, it becomes easier to justify the expense. With an
average energy savings of 30-50%, you will pay for your system
in a matter of a few years.
A true solar water heater
diy kit that supplies instructions and guidance only will cost
you about $30 — $50 for the kit, plus about $70 for the
materials. So, for around 100 bucks you can make it
yourself!
All you need is some very
basic tools, some common sense and a weekend or two to do it.
If you are not at all handy with do it yourself projects, you
could recruit or even hire a friend and still come out way
ahead.

You will get all the guidance
you need to make your own solar hot water heater. You will save
at least 30% on your hot water bill.
This really is something you
can do on your own.
